I had my first smear at 19, they are usually done once you become sexually active, but sometimes doctors advise them for other reasons, they aren't pleasant but are an excellent way of finding out whether you have any infections etc. Best to have them so that you know that you've not got any issues down there! I've been getting pap smears since I was fourteen or fifteen. You should have them done yearly to check for abnormal cells. Abnormal cells can be an indication of cervial cancer which knows no age and can be caused/excellerated if you have an STD. This is especially important if you are currently sexually active. You can also request that an HPV test is done at the same time as many women have no symptoms of this disease. Be your own best advocate at the doctor. If you don't understand why something is being done or don't feel confortable speak up! You also have the right to bring along a trusted friend or family member or request that a female staff member be in the room at the time.
