does azythromyzin affect birthcontrol?

Question:
I am taking this and think I might be pregnant because my pills stopped working when I started this med. Does anyone know if it will cause birth control not to work?

Answers:
Azithromycin does not effect birth control to any significant degree according to the references I checked (Micromedex, eFacts and Comparisons, Lexi-Comp). It is more of an issue with tetracycline, doxycylcline, ampicillin, amoxicillin and penicillin (standard antibiotics that have been known to interfere due to the mechanism of action of the antibiotic). Many doctors, pharmacists etc. will counsel alternative birth control methods with any antibiotic without checking just to CYA. If you have access to Medline you could do a more detailed search to verify. It certainly wouldn't hurt to use an alternative form of contraception while taking any antibiotic (condom is a great choice, and it's only for a short period of time). Also remember that you must take your birth control meds as directed (generally once per day at the same time, ask about what to do if you miss a day). If you are the forgetful type, you might want to switch to something else (maybe the NuvaRing) that is less likely to be affected by forgetfulness. By the way, Val, lighten up...
yes. I believe it will affect birth control. you might call your doctor and ask for sure. most antibiotics will react with birth control.
