Why does my period really smell and how can I prevent it?

Years ago I had a friend that I could ALWAYS tell when she was on her period, she had an odor. She never had one any other time so I have a feeling she just didn't change her pad often enough and maybe didn't bathe or shower enough during this time. If you only have an odor during your period try these two things, but if you have an odor at times other than your period go to the doctor. It could be a bacterial infection or an STD.
