birth control pills?

Question:
why does it matter when you start your first pack? why can't you start them whenever?

Answers:
I really don't feel like typing alot so I'll keep this short.. the other answers are wrong. You can start then whenever the hell you want. Just don't wait too long after your period to do it. The Sunday start is just to make it easier to remember.. but if you think you can remember for any other day... go right ahead. Thats what I do. I think once 3 yrs ago I started on a Sunday.
To prove my answer even more: Look inside your pack, does it come with stickers for the days? Do you notice theres seven stickers all with Monday-Sunday varrying for each start day.. and not just the one sticker with the first day being Sunday?

Start anytime you want hunny!

Other Answers:
You should follow the instructions or start them when your doctor instructs because you will mess up your cycle if you don't
A lot of the problem is that women FORGET when to take the pills. Starting on Sunday makes it easier to remember. Other women can start on the first day of their menstrual period. You're right, start days are arbitrary. But the rules are set up such that either you can take advantage of your body's hormone levels (as in period starters), or you can just line up with a calendar for convenience.
Because the pills work on the cycle that you have your period. That is why they tell you to start them on or after your period ( it's been a while since i was on them).
By the time you finish that first pack or are ready to start the next pack you will get your period.
Hope this helps!

Good Luck
Yes it is very important when you start the pill. You must follow the instructions for the pill that you have.
The pill affects your cycle so you don't want to mess around with it. Mistakes CAN happen if you don't follow the instructions.
You have to start your first pack the Sunday after you start your period because there are usually 28 pills and the pills will regulate your cycle so that you have a regular 28 day cycle. If you don't take it the Sunday after your period then your cycle will be messed up. Then you must take one pill everyday at the same time to ensure that the hormones in the pill are in your body preventing you from ovulating and thus preventing pregnancy.
