The pill is 99.9% effective, IF taken correctly. Some antibiotics can lessen the effectiveness of the pill, so, if at all possible, avoidance of these is recommended.

I'm no expert but I've recently started taking a special kind of birth control - only for acne though. But I've read up on a lot of side-effects and whatnot. So...:
They could be getting pregnant because they are sexually active TOO SOON after starting the pill. The FIRST MONTH a condom should be used in order to prevent pregnancy because the hormones in birth contorl take a long time to start working.
It could also be because they aren't taking it right. It's most EFFECTIVE when taken at the SAME TIME everyday, without missing any pills or doing what you should never do - take two at once.
Usually, if someone gets pregnant while on the pill is because they missed a day or two and didn't use any other protection afterwords. Some women DO have overzealous hormones that can negate the effects of the pill, but that usually hereditary.
When I asked my doctor what the percentage was that I could get pregnant with the birth control that I am on, she said it's round about 1%. If taken correctly, that should be about right :)
