how long did you breastfeed?

Question:
Did you choose to nurse? If so, how long? Did you quit earlier than planned, if so why? Just curious, I nursed for a year. The first month was a nightmare, but after that just fine. My husbands sister planned to do the same thing but only made it a couple of days. Just looking for personal experiences and stories.

Answers:
My first child, I planned to nurse for a year, then ended up having to stop at 4 1/2 months because I got walking pneumonia, and in the early 90s it was unknown whether antibiotics were harmful, so they recommended stopping. My second child was born in 2000, and I ended up nursing him for nearly 2 1/2 years, almost by accident. I had planned on about 18 months, and had started the weaning process at that time, but it was not going well. Then I ended up leaving his father, and I guess both of us were pretty stressed, and nursing really helped. (After about the age of 10 months, however, all nursing was only at home, pretty much only at night/nap time). Also, I knew he was going to be my last baby, and it was hard to let that go, lol. Even now today we have a very strong bond, and I know that long nursing helped to facilitate and seal that bond.
