I work at an ob/gyn office and can explain this to you properly. If a patient has an irregular pap smear she would then come in after her menses for a procedure called a colp. Colposcomy to be exact and what we do is have pt undress from waist down , put her feet up in the stirrups the doctor then will place a speculum into the vagina and will use the colposcope(which is a big microscope to visualize the cervix better for abnormal cells) Doctor will use an liquid called acito white to visualize the cell changes on the cervix as abnormal cells turn white she takes the samples and sends them to pathology you return to the office in 4-6 months for repeat pap and if irregular you may procede with cryotherapy which is freezing of the cervix at timed intervals i believe its 15 minutes then another 7 minutes and what it does is freezes the abnormal cells on the cervix and sluffs them off which is passed threw the watery discharge the patient will then experience. It's very cold but I've been told not painful at all. In my experience as a ob/gyn nurse who is in a room for both procederes the colp is much more painful than the cryo. Hope I explained it for you.
It's when you put your cell phone in the freezer.
