My sister-in-law suffers from PMS. She gets extremely emotional one week before her period.?

Question:
Has emotional outbursts at work and is teary-eyed. Is there any specific medication that she can take in the days before the period? She's really hard to live with, and I think she's knows it but can't help herself. My brother says she's unbearable and temperamental . What can be prescribed for her?

Answers:
She will more than likely benefit the most from prescription drugs. Urge her to see her physician and explain how horrible she feels around the time of her period.

Selective serotonin uptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are prescription medications that alter levels of the brain chemical serotonin in the blood. While these medications are commonly used to treat depression, some SSRIs are prescribed for emotional symptoms in severe cases of PMS and PMDD. They are prescribed either daily or for short-term use, for the 14 days prior to menstruation.
The true serotonin drugs (SSRI’s) like Prozac, Paxil, Lexapro and others are pure serotonin drugs. Zoloft has dual action with some dopamine as well as serotonin.

Changes in diet can also help with PMS: Cutting back on sugar, caffeine, and alcohol may provide some relief from symptoms. Taking supplements containing calcium or evening primrose oil may be helpful for some women.
Depending on her age why doesnt she go on the pill? My one friend went through something similar but she had violent outbursts which were really BAD. She went on the pill and it helps control the hormones which is the main cause of all the problems.
