How much blood can you give when being tested?
Question:
Answers:
Most people have 8-10 pints of blood in their body. It is safe to donate a pint as long as you are not anemic to start with. A pint is about 500ml of blood. If you go to the lab for tests they would have to fill up at least 50 tubes to equal a unit of blood - and most likely a lot more tubes than that since the majority of laboratory test tubes for blood drawing are 5 ml or 7 ml tubes.
And don't worry, if we take too much we will crossmatch you and transfuse you if we need to. Actually, the amount of blood taken can add up after awhile and is especially dangerous for premature newborns. These tiny babies are routinely transfused because they have to undergo so many lab tests and their total blood volume is very small to begin with.
So - donate blood when you can - you could be helping a tiny preemie!
Up to 1 pint!
