How do you recover from a violent crime?

Question:
I was abducted by a stranger, beat and raped for several hours and had to walk home naked. I don't think I'll ever recover mentally or emtionally. Everyone has been kind and understanding. I'm on lots of meds. There is a warrant for his arrest. I just don't think I'll ever be OK. I am 49, single and alone.

Answers:
I'm also a victim of a violent crime, though certainly not as bad as yours. I was mugged at gun point and beat the living hell out of the guy.

It's been three years and I am still not over it. I have high levels of anxiety and paranoia. It has gotten better with time, and I no longer have panic attacks, but the results are permanent.

It will be the same for you. This is something you will never forget. I just hope that you can heal and that it won't haunt you for the rest of your life.

I would suggest seeing a psychiatrist AND a psychologist. If you're anything like me, you'll need medicine for anxiety, which you may already have. But a psychologist can give you therapy that will, hopefully, help you to heal.

Since you are single and "alone," as you put it, I would suggest finding a support group. Having other people who have suffered through the same thing will help you, and then you will have someone to call if you're feeling scared and alone.

I'm so sorry that this happened to you and I pray that you'll get past it and become whole again.

You need counseling.
Your police department should offer that service.
What a horrible thing to go through.
I am sorry and hope they catch the person who did it.
Seek out a support group in your area. You are not alone and not the only person who has experienced this type of trauma. You need to surround yourself with others who can relate and understand what you've been through. If there is no group around, church, friends, or a mental health specialist could help you through this time of rebuilding. You will be able to recover, although it will take a lot of patience and time. Good luck to you.
Counseling and having someone (friend, family member, etc) in your life that you feel comfortable talking to them about it.
