Tampons? Viginity? 12 yeras old? TSS?

Question:
okay i'm 12 (and using my sisters points) i use tampons b/c pads is a bIG blur. my questions r Do tampons steal ur virginity? Do i have a bigger risk of getting (TSS Toxic Shock Syndrome) than a 20-48 yr old women?

Answers:
Tampons don't take your virginity, that idea is outdated and came from the idea that if your hymen (flesh covering the opening to your vagina) was not in tact you were no longer a virgin – your hymen has no relation as to whether or not your are a virgin, it can be broken by any number of things, not just penetration from things like tampons but also from high activity sports, some girls aren't even born with a hymen.
Virginity is down to how you perceive it, everyone will say that you loose your virginity when you have penetrative penis to vaginal intercourse, but there are grey areas that some people class as sex and other don't, such as masturbation or oral sex with a partner.
I am sorry you were raped, I unfortunately know rape victims so know how badly it can effect your life, but then as someone has already pointed out if you were raped you have already lost your virginity, so whether a tampon could or not isn't really a concern.

Tampons carry a lot of risks, toxic shock syndrome is the better known and the most dangerous, younger people do have a higher risk of toxic shock syndrome because they are less likely to have the antibodies to deal with the bacteria involved with toxic shock syndrome.

TSS is rare, however not as rare as statistics imply because of the way in which they classify 'official' statistics, it is also a serious illness.
The risks of TSS are increased significantly with tampon use, increased again if you use commercial tampons such as Tampax.
If you change a tampon regularly it decreases your risk, but the risk is still there no matter how long you wear a tampon for, if worried about TSS I would recommend you switch to a safer menstrual option.

What you also have to remember is that there are a lot more risks with tampons than just toxic shock syndrome, because tampons prevent the vagina from cleaning itself, absorb vaginal fluids, cause friction, give bacteria a place to multiply and in the case of commercial tampons also contain harmful chemicals it means a greatly increased risk of not only toxic shock syndrome but also infections such as bacterial vaginosis and yeast infections, it also means vaginal splitting and chemical exposure.

If you do use tampons you are at much greater use if you use commercial tampons such as Tampax, if worried about health problems you may want to look into other options, if not pads then organic tampons such as Natracare http://www.natracare.com sponges like Jade & Pearl http://www.jadeandpearl.com or menstrual cups such as Divacup http://www.divacup.com as these do not contain harmful chemicals as commercial tampons do.

Here is a link about toxic shock syndrome as well as a link to move general tampon risks, I'd recommend if you are using tampons you learn about this, as well as the other risks - it is your choice what you use for menstrual protection, but it should be an educated choice.
