Is it possible to have a ectopic pregnancy with a negative pregnancy test?

Question:
I had my tubes tied 4 months ago, experienced some complications with a serious infection and now i am worried that i somehow got pregnant. I have missed 2 periods, had some very scant spotting and have lower left abdominal pain for 3 weeks. I went to the doctor and she said I could be pregnant and did a urine test but it was negative. She went on to say that there is definately a problem with my left tube and ovary after she examined me and i almost jumped off the table it hurt so much. I also have pain during intercourse like ive never had before. So I need to know what the actually chance is that the test is wrong

Answers:
Ectopic pregnancy may be suspected when symptoms present AND hCG levels fail to be detected, or double, and/or if the hCG level rises, falls and rises again. So yes, it's possible to be negative. Have your doc run a blood test to be certain. You could also have an infection or scarring/damage from previous infection, so have her test for that as well. Good luck and hang in there.
