I have been having pain in my left lower abdomen. What could it be?

Question:
It is a sharp pain off and on. I have had it for a couple days. It's not bad enough where I can't wait or anything like that - but it does hurt.

Answers:
It sounds like you're having pain from low blood flow to the gut. Two major blood supplies go to the large intestine. One supply ends and another starts at what we call the "splenic flexure" part of the colon, right before the colon turns downward to reach the rectum. This area is realtively poorly perfused by blood, and when you have low blood flow to that area, (or if you're exerting your self and all the blood is going to your muscles instead of your gut), you will feel pain in that area. That's why sometimes when you run after having a large meal, you will get that pain. Usually the pain is a little higher in the left abdomen, but it certainly could be lower. However, there are other more serious causes you should consider - like diverticulosis, pain from the ovaries (Cysts, torsion). Or it could be a muscle pain.

Should you bring this up to the doctor, they may do a sound-wave test of you abdomen to look at your ovaries make sure there is nothing wrong there.

But it may be as simple as you drinking enough water to promote good blood flow to the gut.
Could be ovulation...could be gas...could be appendicitis. If it's bad or persists you should go to a doctor. Let's face it, you are worried enough to ask about it on youqa.com s.

Appendix can radiate pain to left side, too.
The organs located in your left lower quadrant are mostly intestines and some liver. You could just be having gas or fecal movement. If it persists I suggest going to the doctor.
Your appendix is on your right side. It could also be radiated pain from somewhere else.
