Can NOT taking your thyroid medicine be dangerous?

Question:
Have super low thyroid but the prescription medicine (Synthroid) didn't help so stopped taking it almost a year ago. I have been taking kelp instead daily but someone told me it was dangerous not to be taking the prescription stuff. Is this true or not?

Answers:
My guess is that your hypothyroidism is not due to lack of iodine so kelp doesn't help. Kelp provides iodine not thyoid hormone. Hypothyroidism is typically not acutely dangerous but causes problems over a period of time. So the comment on slow death is appropriate.

Other Answers:
you should discuss this with your doctor.

According to my doctor when she found out I had quit taking my Levoxyl medication--"Don't you know you could go into a coma from doing that?" So I guess my answer is yes, it can be dangerous.

You can actually die from doing this I have heard. My mom didn't take her medication for a week, and she was lucky she didn't die. Maybe the reason it did not help is because you needed a different med like Armour Thyroid or you needed a larger dose. Your endocrinologist should have helped you regulate your dosage. It took me over 9 months before my dosage was close.
