No medicine, try these tips:
1. Always go to bed at the same time, get up at the same time too, this will help you develop "sleep rhythm"
2. Turn off all audio/visual appliances approx. 1 hour before going to bed, this is a way to relax your mind, reading a book before going to bed is good.
3. Do not drink caffeine or alcohol during the last 3 hours that you are awake, if you are a smoker, try to avoid smoking close to your bedtime.
4. No snacks for several hours before going to bed.
5. If you find that you cant get to sleep because you are worrying about things allow yourself a set amount of time ( say 45 minutes) to do this, after that put a stop to the pondering!
6. If you cannot sleep, do not get up or turn on the lights, just lying in your bed will also relax your body and mind somewhat.
7. Make sure your bedroom is well ventilated and not too hot.

Avoid "cat-naps" for one. If you're a coffee drinker, tone that down too. Third would be to clear your mind with prayer or meditation as you are getting ready to lay on your bed.

Try the natural approach first. If you have trouble getting to sleep try Valarian/Passion Flower. If you have trouble staying asleep try Melatonin. You can use both together too. Stop using stimulants 4 hours before you go to bed (caffiene, B Vitamins). If you are taking a Multi-Vitamin make sure it is early in the day - not at night. If you take calcium - take it at night instead.
