It is different for each individual, most women start it earlier than they think while they are still having normal periods, the hot flashes come and go for quite awhile, but come less frequently the older you get.
I started mine in 1992, and even though my periods stopped in 2001, I still get a few hot flashes, but much less severe.
Everyone is different, though. I have talked to people who have told me that, they never experienced any hot flashes or very few.
