The first step is to verify that she is pregnant by performing a blood test to check the HCG level. This is the hormone that indicates pregnancy. If she is pregnant and bleeding then an ultrasound is done to make sure there is not an ectopic pregnancy which is where the baby starts to grow in the Fallopian tube instead of the uterus. It is also done to see if the baby is in the uterus unless it is too early to see. Very heavy bleeding that doesn't stop needs attention either from the OB doctor or the Emergency Room if after hours. If the bleeding is not heavy and/or stops, then a repeat HCG blood test is drawn in about 3 days. If the level is increasing, she is still pregnant. If it is decreasing, she has likely miscarried. Blood clots usually indicates heavy bleeding so this should be assessed by a doctor.
