Do you think the age for mammograms should be reduced from the current 40 to..?

Question:
maybe 35 or 30 years old? It just seems like more women nowadays are getting breast cancer in their 30's and are dying from it. I think 35 might be a good age to being getting mammograms, maybe even younger.

Answers:
I agree that you should begin at age 30, men and women. I know of 3 men around here that have had breast cancer in the last year. I don't care if you have a family history of it or not cause I had to have a masectomy with no family history. I had Pagets Breast Cancer. So, anyone who is concerned should be allowed to have a mamogram! Even though the Pagets did not show up in a mamogram. It started as a little bump on my nipple
and it hurt and burned really bad. They had to scrape it for cells to determine what it was.

I agree with 30. I have been hearing about cancer in the 30's and think it should be lowered. Although it is very hard to detect cancer in the 30's due to more dense breast tissue. I had a mammogram at 30 and they could hardly see anything due to all the density I have in my breasts. It would be a good idea for the insurance companies to lower the age though.
i do. i tried to have one when i was younger, because i was concerned about something i felt, and they told me i would have to get a perscription because i was too young. a lot of people who are "too young" get cancer. it made me really angry. i had no doctor at the time, and couldn't afford insurance. fortunately, it was nothing, but what if it wasn't? i think 21 is a good age to start.
I live in Canada and breast screening places won't take you that young unless you have a family history of the illness. I know this because my sister and my mom both had breast cancer - so I started getting screened in my late 20's early thirties.

Doing self-breast exams is important. Talk to your doctor about it and get tested if you are concerned. But mammograms aren't exactly healthy - given it's radiation - so I don't know if I advocate earlier screening. If you have any history in your family then talk to your doctor.
