Tampons ladies! Toxic Shock Syndrome and super absorbancy? Is it because of how long it is IN or the SIZE?

Question:
why do they say super absorbancy is more risky for TSS. Is it because you generally leave them in longer (thus more chance for bacteria etc) or is it something about the size?

meaning, if you use super but change often, are you good? thx.

Answers:
Toxic shock syndrome is far from the only risk with tampons, because of how tampons work they prevent the vaginas natural self-cleaning functions, give bacteria a warm pores environment to multiply within, commercial tampons introduce chemicals into the vagina that effect vaginal pH so in turn bacterial balance, and tampons absorb discharge resulting in drying and splitting of the vaginal walls.

The reason more absorbent tampons carry a greater risk is because they further add to the above mentioned problems, more absorbent means that they are absorbing not just more menstrual flow but more discharge that contributes to vaginal splitting, often materials used also contribute to bacterial growth. How long a tampon is in also affects the risk because the longer a tampon is within the vagina the longer the bacteria are kept within the vagina and the more bacteria multiply.

If you do use tampons it is far safer to use organic tampons, sponge tampons or homemade tampons as they are made from natural materials and do not contain chemicals used for bleaching so reducing risk of infection and toxic shock syndrome. You should always change as often as possible 3-4 hours, and use the lightest absorbency available for your menstrual flow, of course also don't use tampons when you are not menstruating or when you are sleeping.

If you have a heavier flow, or even if you don't, I'd suggest trying menstrual cups, these can be left in for up to 12 hours without leaking or any health risk because they can carry a lot more blood than tampons and unlike tampons they are not linked with any health problems. Menstrual cups are also far cheaper than tampons, better for the environment and more body-positive, they also offer money back guarantees.

it has nothing to do with the size. It all has to do with how long you leave it in....just dont ever leave them in overnight...
