Exercising can really help, as much a pain that sounds to be. Also, I found dairy helps calm the pain too. avoid caffine and drink lots of water.

do push ups, specially if you are expecting your period. it works for my sister. =) if it becomes painful as to affect your daily routine, use a heating pad on your lower back and take a couple ibuprophen if available.
