How to Assess and Deal With Tinnitus
by J Currie

It's tough to believe the irritation and disruption that tinnitus, or ringing in the ears, can induce in the lives of sufferers. They hear a whistle, sissing, thundering, cheeping, buzzing, drumming or whistling racket when no noise noise is really present.

These perceived sounds can be infrequent or perpetual, often precluding them from falling asleep, concentrating on work, and loving their daily activities. Severe forms of tinnitis have contributed to job loss, divorce, anxiety, depression, violence and even suicide.

Sources say that up to 30% of the population has tinnitus in varying degrees.

Causes of tinnitus
There are a host of theories about how tinnitus sounds are in reality created within the head, but no one knows for certain. Since tinnitus is a consequence, not a disease, the best way to address it is to find out what stimulated it.

tinnitus can be a symptom of Meniere's disease, an inner ear disorder that also induces lightheadedness and nausea. But many other causes of tinnitus have been named, such as:

ear infection
ear drum damage
allergies and sinus problems
tinnitus from loud noises
a blow to the head
high cholesterol
tinnitus from tension, depression, and traumatic life events
medications
heavy metal poisoning
jaw alignment problems (TMJ)
low thyroid
ear wax build up
certain tumors
In some cases there will be two or more causes of tinnitus in one patient, for example exposure to noise and anxiousness occurring together is a frequent combination.

Diagnosis Of tinnitus
E.N.T. specialists attempting to interpret tinnitus will enquire if you have got vertigo or imbalance, a blow to the head or other sickness, and what medicines you're taking. They might do a physical examination of the head, neck, and ears, test your blood pressure and pulse, and advocate an audiologic appraisal.

However, tinnitus sufferers who have conducted some research on their own typically end up diagnosing themselves with tinnitus.

tinnitus Treatments
Conventional medical treatments such as surgery or prescription drugs don't treatment tinnitus. Most specialists treat tinnitus with sedatives, anti-depressants, muscle relaxants or antihistamines. In acute cases, special hearing aids or masking devices have been prescribed, or surgical injections of lidocaine directly to the inner ear.

Alternative treatments like hypnotherapy and acupuncture have also been used with some degree of success. Excellent results have been achieved with natural remedies that are formulated specifically for tinnitus. These natural-source tinnitus remedies help most sufferers either reduce or do away with their symptoms over time.

Prevention of tinnitus
Those who have tinnitus can take steps to check or cut down the intensity of their ear ringing by:

Limiting caffeine and smoking intake (both reduce blood flow to the ears).
Switching from aspirin to another pain reliever.
Minimizing salt intake.
Staying away from loud noise.
Exercising to increase blood flow to the ears.
