What could be causing me to bleed when my period ended a week earlier?

Question:
I'm 24, never had kids, am not taking birth control, am not going through any extra stress, &I have had regular, predictable periods since I started them. It started seven days ago. I had been off my regular period for only one week. It started very light, just a little mauve. Then it got darker and now for the past four days I have been wearing reg. sized tampons. I really don't think this is just an irregular period because it doesn't feel like a period. I always cramp when I'm on my period and I feel no pain at all. I have never had an irregualr period either. It's always been very predictable. Also, regular periods don't usually start out light & get heavier. I have a history of vaginal irritation in response to something still unknown, I just have to deal with it. I've talked with my gyn at day three who said to just wait if it continues. It shows no sign of stopping and my gyn decided to go on vacation. I tried to make an appt, but can't get in til next week w/ a nurse pract.

Answers:
Menstruation does not equate menstrual cramps, most women can prevent cramping all together, so it could still be possible that it is another period, we all get them from time to time so it may be something to watch out for over the coming months as it may be a sign of something going on, or you may simply just need to pop a few evening primrose oil capsules to get it back to normal.

Normally my response would be possible ovulation bleeding or STD's however it would not be heavy as you describe if this was the case, certainly ovulation bleeding wouldn't last this long.

You aren't using birth control so have you had sex, could you have been pregnant?

As a side note you say you have a history of vaginal irritation, and cause still unknown, you also say you use tampons – tampons are very bad for vaginal health as they prevent normal vaginal cleaning functions, give bacteria a place to multiply, cause vaginal splitting, contribute to menstrual cramps as well as heavy flow, and if using commercial tampons they also introduce chemicals into your vagina increasing risk of infection, TSS and can cause irritation or allergic reactions – have you tried to use other menstrual options such as pads, free-flow methods or menstrual cups?

Just a suggestion because I know fine well how ignorant many gynaecologists can be about even the most basic of sexual, reproductive, menstrual and sexual health problems, it's shocking sometimes...I know this not just through personal experience, but also my own gynaecological studies and training gynaecologists at my local family planning clinic.

Whatever happens good luck!
