About PCOS and alopecia?

Question:
Do you necessarily have to have androgenetic alopecia if you have PCOS? If you are experiencing hair loss, but it seems like a sudden onset, especially if your PCOS never affected your scalp before, what type of hair loss would this be then?

Answers:
Hair loss is a symptom of PCOS, but since PCOS is a syndrome, you can have it without having all the symptoms. So your hair loss may or may not be connected to your PCOS. I personally developed more symptoms as I got older because my PCOS (more specifically, the insulin resistance that was causing it) became more severe and made my hormones worse. I have had some PCOS symptoms since I was 9, but my hair didn't start getting thinner until I was about 20. Yours might be a new PCOS-related problem that just developed, or it might be totally unrelated. Since it developed suddenly, I would ask a doctor about it because things that seem to just happen all of a sudden might be cause for concern. It may be caused by an underlying health problem, or it may just be stress.
I don't think so. I was tested for PCOS because of heristutism, not alopecia.

Is the hair loss patchy or general? If it's general then it could just be from hair stress, breakage, especially if you have long hair or if you wear your hair pulled back too often.

If it's patchy, then you should talk to your doctor.
