What can it mean when you're 27 and don't have a regular period each month?

Question:
I'm 27 and I have never had regular periods. The first period I ever had was when I was 18 and I'll have one maybe one a year...if that. I've been to several GYN's who won't do an exam since I'm not sexually active (I know it's unusual, but I'm waiting until marriage). They did do an ultrasound to make sure my female organs were okay and they were, but they did find a cyst on one of my ovaries, but said that was common and nothing to be alarmed about. I've had bouts with eating disorders the past 12 years, but my weight has never gotten that low for very long and my weight has been stable for almost 2 years now. They wanted to put me on birth control pills so that I would start to have a period, but I don't have a problem with not having one except I do want to have a baby one day. I'm not jealous of not having the cramps and mood swings! But, I really want a baby some day and I just wonder what might be wrong. Does anyone who has had similar problems have any ideas?

Answers:
Yes. I am 39 and my periods have been irregular all my life. I had an ultrasound done and my doctor told me that I had polycystic ovaries (pco). There are small cysts on my ovaries. The cysts are actually eggs that were never completely released from my ovary. She said that it wasn't serious, but I was wanting to have a baby. She put me on fertility drugs, which gave me regular periods, but after a year, I still hadn't conceived. I would ask my doctor about pco, and see if it's possibly the reason you are not having regular periods.
