dizziness and incoherent speech?

Question:
I am 66 and diabetic, which seems well controlled by Metformin 850 3 times daily. I eat a healthy diet, which does not include meat. Can anyone tell me why I sometimes stumble about like a drunk (I dont drink), become extremely dizzy when I stand up from sitting, and am frequently unable to express myself to a point where I utter gibberish for a few seconds??? My blood pressure is under control, and I take Atenolol.

Answers:
Hiya, I'm also a diabetic controlled by Metformin. You don't say if you blood test, but if you do and your blood glucose is below 4 this could be the reason. If you don't blood test it may be worth your while investing in a cheap machine (Boots have them on special offer at the moment for just £3.99). I would say that your dose of Metformin is quite high and it's quite possible this could be reduced if you are eating a balanced diet. Try eating more carbohydrate and if the symptoms stop then its definitely that your metformin dose is too high. Please do not alter the dose of your medication without medical advice, that could do more harm that good!!!!!
If it's not due to low blood sugar, it may be worth going to the doctor for a check up as it could also be a Transient Ischaemic Attack (TIA). This is when the blood supply to the brain temporarily is interupted and causes confusion and symptons similar to your description.
You should not be taking atenolol, its a beta blocker and not recommended for diabetics. I was on that and when I was diagnosed I was changed to Lisinopril so you need to have that reviewed very soon! The symptons could also be caused by taking the atenolol when you really should not be. Again, do not change or stop taking the atenolol without medical advice!!!
To sum up...see the doctor.
If you would like to chat some more on this I am on yahoo messenger under the same name as my name here.
What did your Doctor say about those symptoms? If you haven't, GO! Something is not right....really not right. Skip all the guesses....don't ask your friends....get to your Doctor! Please!
