what causes strep (not strep throat) but down there. what causes you to get that?

Question:
how can you prevent it? what are the symtons?

Answers:
Strep B is a naturally occurring bacteria that is present in about 30% of women. The bacteria are considered "normal flora" which means that they are not part of an infection or disease process, but are just there. In this case, there are no symptoms. The only time most women are tested for this bacteria is when they are in the last 8 weeks of pregnancy. if they test positive, they will need IV antibiotics during labor to prevent Strep B infection in their newborn baby. This infection can be deadly for the baby. Once you have been tested and found to have the Strep B bacteria present, you are considered colonized and should receive antibiotics every time you deliver a baby.

The only time Strep B can be dangerous to an adult is when they have a compromised immune system due to AIDS, cancer and chemo, and other autoimmune diseases. Some elderly may be susceptible to infection from Strep B if they are already sicken by pneumonia or other bacterial infections.

To summarize, if you are a healthy adult or adolescent you should not have a problem with Strep B even if you are positive. If you are pregnant then your doctor will test you in the last weeks of pregnancy to determine whether or not you need antibiotics during delivery.
