I'm always sleepy!?

Question:
I'm 21 years old.I work really hard and play pretty hard as well. I'm always so tired when I wake up. Every morning when I wake up I'm so angry because I just want to sleep all day and I literally feel like I am dying. Any tips on how to stay awake throughout the day.I'm not overweight I work out..but there is NO way I can work out first thing when I wake up. Also..any tips on falling asleep more easily without medication?

Answers:
Maybe you need more sleep than you are getting. Try going to sleep a lot earlier. I always make sure i get no less then 8.5 hours a night. I will wake up naturally after 10. Its not unusual to need this much sleep, especially at a younger age.

If you want to fall asleep without meds, try avoiding caffeine after 12 noon and bore yourself to sleep by listening to your breath (some call it meditation). If you find yourself thinking, always go back to listening to your breath, but don't get frustrated, just be persistant. If this becomes a practise, your body will get the idea sooner most nights. Also, try checking in with your body, from toes to head, to make sure everything is as relaxed as it can possibly be. Good luck!

Hey, I'm 23 and have the same problem. I had this problem first about 3 yrs ago..turned out I was 6 weeks pregnant! Once you rule that out, it could be a number of reasons. For me its the fact that I have low iron and that can make you tired. I have to take multivitamins and make sure that they have a good amount of iron in them. It could also be the fact that you are not sleeping well..could be the mattress, the pillow, or just plain stress. Even though you're sleep it doesn't mean your resting. Have your doctor test your blood..Hope this helps a bit.
You really can’t permanently change. Trust me I have tried. Some people simply seem to be more active and alert at different times of the day – which makes perfect sense from an evolutionary point of view. If everyone were “morning” people then, when living in the bush, there would be a solid 8 hours when animals or other humans could attack without warning. If on the other hand some people are “night” people, and are more active in the evening and the night time, then in the human community, there will always be someone awake to sound an alarm and wake the rest of the folks up. And of course – those communities that had people who were awake at varying times, did not get eaten by animals as often, and so they lived longer, and reproduced more successfully.

I seriously believe that it is an evolutionary component of our genetic make up – just like some people have brown hair, some people are morning people, and it is not something that we can readily change.

Having said THAT – if you are a night person, and you want to get up early every morning for work, or for a class or something, and do it with the least amount of fuss – the thing to do is to be relentless about it. You MUST get up at the same time every morning, and go to bed at the same time every night – 8 hours before you plant to wake up. And you MUST do this religiously – every morning. There is no sleeping in on the weekends, or going out late with your friends. You have to keep the schedule. It is kind of like jet-lag, your body will acclimate, but only if you force it.

The thing is that even if you keep the schedule – while you will be able to get up for your 8:AM class, you will still not be bright and perky like you are in the afternoon or evening, and once you give up the schedule, once the semester is over, or whatever has been forcing you to get up early, you will revert back to your body’s preferred schedule. It take me about 3 days before I am back on an evening schedule.

The real issue for me however, is that keeping that morning schedule, despite being an night person (and I have done it) is poor stewardship of my energy. I can be up on a regular basis early in the morning, but I am groggy and not terribly productive. Then I am going to go to bed when I am finally feeling good about being alive and vigorous and productive? Why? Yes – I can do it to accommodate some one else’s schedule – but it is NOT a good use of my time and energy.
