I have to get a barium enema. I am worried that I won't be able to hold the enema in. Any one been thru this?

Question: I am scheduled for a barium enema in two weeks. In the past when I have had an enema I have had trouble holding it. I am worried that I will not be able to hold the barium enema. I have a lot of anxiety about this. If I could not hold the enema it would be so embarassing.

The enema tip has a balloon on the end to hold it in for you. Just don't bear down once it's in. You'll be fine.

call the hospitals xray department on the number in your appointment letter and talk over your concerns with them. theyll be dealing with incontinent patients all the time so it wont be too unusual or embarrassing to them, but i bet theyll appreciate the call! theyll have the best knowledge appropriate to you ; however id say even the event of you having a little leak may even count as a "result" rather than a problem
