What are the dangers, if any, of coloring your hair?

Question:
Have there been any reliable studies done? I dont color my hair but have before...

Answers:
I hear about not coloring your hair while you're pregnant, at least during the first trimester. Of course, it would be totally unethical to put a baby's life in danger by having a study about a potential teratogenic substance, so nobody's willing to say exactly what would happen if you colored your hair then. But it's just a general precaution--since they don't know one way or the other, then they're gonna say, "don't do it" just to cover their a$ses.

But the usual problems are irritation and allergies, just like with any topical substance. So do a patch test like the box says and don't use haircolor if you have broken skin or a rash or something like that. Plus, some kinds really stink, so have good ventilation around so you don't get in a sneezing fit and accidentally squirt some dye in your eye and blind yourself.
The only thing I have ever heard is not to color your hair when you are pregnant.
