Can the mirena cause spontaneous abortion?

Question:
I was told today that the mirena can cause spontaneuous abortion. The thing is, I'm against abortion unless it's a case of rape, incest, or medical reasons. My 2 kids are 51 weeks apart and they are 1 and 2 now. I got my mirena when at my 6 week check-up after i had my oldest. The reason I chose it instead of anything else was because my kids were concieved on the patch and the nuva ring. I can't keep down birth control pills and I weigh too much for the depo shot. Plus the fact that if I got pregnant again, I might not be able to carry it because of all the health problems I had from having my kids so close together. I haven't been pregnant since having it inserted but I'm just wondering if anyone else has heard about this? If it's true, I'm going to get it taken out. I'm calling my doctor tomorrow to find out but I just wanted some input before I went.

Answers:
Yes, Mirena can prevent a newly conceived baby from implanting in your womb, causing him or her to die. You may be told that Mirena does not cause abortion, but this is based on the incorrect notion that pregnancy begins at implantation. This is scientifically false and intentionally misleading. Pregnancy begins at fertilization, when your egg and your partner's sperm combine. By the time implantation occurs, your child is already 7-10 days old.

I admire you for wanting to do the right thing and have the Mirena removed. Other side effects of Mirena include:

* Increased risk of tubal pregnancy
* Perforated uterus
* Pelvic inflammatory disease
* Embedment of the device's arms into the wall of your womb

You should know that all IUD's and all hormonal birth control methods (the Pill, Depo-Provera, NuvaRing, Ortho Evra, etc.) can cause early abortions by preventing the implantation of your baby. The only methods that do not have the potential to cause abortion are natural family planning and barrier methods (condoms, the sponge, the cervical cap, the diaphragm, spermicidal foams and jellies, etc.)

Best wishes to you and your family.
