women who have had mastectomies. Have you had both?
breasts removed? How did you feel about it at the time and how do you feel about it now? How old are you and what (if any) kinds of problems have you faced?
Answers:
My mum had a radical bilateral mastectomy at 47 because of very advanced breast cancer. She handled it wonderfully. She healed very fast. She was never the type of person to lay around feeling sorry for herself. She was up out of bed and moving around about 12 hours after the op. She was home within the week and was out dancing and having dinner 5 days after coming home. She was a little worried dad wouldnt still find her attractive but dad adored her and deep down she knew that and was very comfortable and confident in the relationship. They talked about it once..he assured her and that was it life moved on.
She had some swelling in her upper arms..fluid.which is quite normal but no, no real problems. Mum still worked and danced and was around to cradle her grandkids and love them. She was put on Novaldex (brand name for Tomoxifon). She had 6 weeks of radiation treatment and other than a bit of burning..all went fine. Thirteen years after the mastectomy she was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer of the liver (meaning the cancer had spread to the liver). She started chemotherapy but sadly 10 weeks later, she died. The trick is to catch it early and to act on it early.
