What could be wrong?

Question:
I went to the doctor 3 months ago for my yearly visit. I am on synthroid and birth control. I told him at the time I felt very tired, having chest pains, hungry all the time, fall asleep easily, but don't stay asleep all night long. I can be sitting watching TV and fall asleep! I have gained about 25 pounds in the last year. I just felt blah. He put me on Lexapro and upped my synthroid. I do feel happier, more laid back. BUT still very tired, eat more than ever, and still gaining weight. I don't sit around I am busy I do work, I run alot with my kids, and do some exercise...I just can't seem to kick this blah feeling. I don't like the meds, or maybe it's me but my sexual energy has gone down too. I am only 38. Any thoughts??

Answers:
First, whatever you do, *do not* stop your Lexapro without qualified medical advice. Drugs like Lexapro need to be dealt with in close consultation with your physician for many reasons, one of which is that if the time comes to stop them, the dose often needs to be tapered gradually.

That being said, many of the side effects that you describe have been attributed to Lexapro--see the link below. Also, a slow thyroid can make you very tired, and can even mimic some of the symptoms of depression.

I think that you should call your doctor right away. If you are not satisfied with the response, then I would make an appointment to see an endocrinologist without delay--that's a specialist who deals with thyroid and other hormonal conditions. If your doctor cannot give you a referral, then call the nearest university medical center to get one.

When it comes to women's health, don't be discouraged. You live there and you know best how you feel. Some women who need synthroid for a slow thyroid need to go through a series of a few doctors before they find one who will be a true partner in their health care.

Best wishes and hope you start feeling better soon.

well maybe u need to lower ur doses !
Make your doctor aware of this, and ask his advice, if it isn't helping go to another doctor.
I assume you have hypothyroidism due to the synthroid use. The weight gain, lack of energy, and other issues can definately be problems of this condition. However, since the synthroid has been increased I would bet the problems are with your birth control pills. The sexual energy issue points to the birth control or the Lexapro which is an antidepressant. I would tell you to see if you could change the strength or type of birth control pill. Hormone fluctuations can really impact your mood, sex drive, energy, etc. Just a note-the Depo shot can also cause the same problems with added mood problems as well. Good luck
sounds like you may be diabetic.the only symtem missing is thirsty all the time.when you eat , do you get sleepy right away.?go to the bathroom alot?.ask your doctoe to check your glucose levels, can't hurt.good luck
Been exactly where you've been...
Blah feeling...are you still depressed? Gaining weight, feeling down, gaining weight, horrible circle.

Are you being treated by an endocrinologist for the thyroid conditions or did your doctor just decide you were hypothyroid without doing any tests? FYI...Being hypothyroid can allow you to be depressed and some antidepressants are notorious for affecting libido.

If you paid to get your brakes fixed and they still squeaked, you take your car back to the dealer wouldn't you? If you still aren't feeling well, talk to your doctor about a referral to an endocrinologist, I think the answer is with your thyroid.

Good Luck Sweetie.
