My wife had a colposcopy & was revealed that her abnormal cells were mild What could cause this We are worried
Question:
Answers:
Most cases of cervical dysplasia (abnormal cells) are caused by HPV. There are many strains of this virus and it is VERY common. Only a couple of them cause dysplasia, which is also pretty common, especially in women in their 20s.
If her dysplasia is mild, there is a good likelihood that her immune system will clear it up on its own. Her doctor will probably want to see her for a follow up Pap smear in 3 or 6 months rather than the usual year. If it progresses then cryotherapy or LEEP may be warranted to excise the abnormal part of her cervix.
If it continues to progress, it can lead to cervical cancer. This is why women get regular Paps. so that they can screen for cancer and treat the problem before it ever gets there. Please try not to worry. If the colposcopy showed only mild dysplasia, the chances of her ending up with cancer are very slim. Just make sure that she follows her doctor's advice about monitoring the situation.

I don't think it is, but it could possibly be colon cancer.

You can have abnormal cells on the cervix if you have just recently had a baby. Sexually transmitted viruses (like HPV) can cause abnormal cells as well.
Things that increase risk are birth control pills, smoking, having a partner who has been with another woman who has abnormal cells or HPV, Women who take immune suppressing drugs like for an organ transplant, women with HIV, starting intercourse at an early age etc..
Abnormal cells are often called pre cancerous cells. As you know cervical cancer is nothing to screw around with. She can have the cells frozen off, lasered off, burned off and then re-test.
They can do the LEEP procedure to remove the affected tissue.
Good Luck!
