is your first ultrasound during pregnancy the most accurate in giving an appropriate time frame of pregnancy ?

Question:
i had an ultrasound done on april 2nd that figured i was 6 weeks and two days pregnant. i had one done on april 20th that figured i was 8 weeks and two days pregnant. which would be about a week differnce. but i have had recent ones that put me far below the weeks i thought i was. which would be most accurate? i heard its always the first is that true?

Answers:
ultrasound done in the 1st 12 weeks usually gives the most accurate estimate of the fetal age and delivery date. measurements done after 12 weeks show a much higher variability, most likely since the parameters used later (as in the head diameter, circumference of the head and abdomen, femoral length, etc) show much higher viariability than the parameter used during the 1st three months (crown-rump length).
as a general rule, the measurements should not be off by more or less than two weeks. anything greater than that, especially if it persists on follow-up ultrasound studies, may be an indicator of a problem.

Other Answers:
The answer is YES. First three months of pregnancy Sonograms can predict the delivery time with one week erorr . In second 3 months the erorr could be 2 weeks and the last 3 months 3 weeks. For the gender identification best time is after second 3 months.
