My periods have been strange for the last 6-8 months, what can it be?

Question:
Has anyone ever had a period which stop and starts for no particular fixed period. it comes for a few days, then goes away, then a week later, it starts in drips and drabs. last oct it stayed away for 3 months! i thought i was pregnant, as i had unprotected sex with my then b/f who is now my husband. i have put on lots of weight in the last 2 years due to stress but i'm working it off at present. i am sorely stressed out by this...i made an appointment at a gynaec but because i have asthma and anaemic tendencies i could only be accommodated at a hospital with sufficient backup if something should go wrong with my hysteroscopy operation(if i'm saying that correctly). so i dont even know wots wrong yet and i will only now be attended to at the end of sept as the gynaec only sees patients once a month at that particular branch. medical situation so awful here in uk, and now theres this nagging pain on my right side...any clues??

First of all, a missed period can be caused by several things. I see where you say you are stressed out....stress is one of the main causes for missing a period. Also, is there any kind of birth control medicine that you are on now? Some of those will make you miss your period, such as depo provera. You may also have an ovarian cyst (pain in the side). My advice to you is try and relax and not let it stress you out. Go to www.webmd.com and do a search there. You may be able to find more information. Good luck, calm down, and relax.
Next time you go to the doctor have them tet you for thyrods.
It sounds hormonal.

The #1 hormone - because it can affect the production of all the other hormones - is insulin. Ask your doctor for a fasting insulin blood test . Ask for a copy of your results. 10 or higher is abnormal for an adult.

Also ask for a saliva test. This test will tell you if any of your feminine hormones are not at the best levels. I do not like doctors who prescribe hormones for any feminine problem without testing first. When that happened to me - the shot he gave me switched me from low blood sugar to diabetes.

Your symptoms (all of them) could be related to low blood sugar. Some sound quite like mine, the stress, and the weight gain, especially. You may want to check out www.hufa.org, and click on the symptoms link to check yourself out. It may save you from a hysterectomy.
