What is the possibility of getting pregnant at the end of your cycle?

Question: Is is safe to have sex without birth control the few days before your period is due, say the 18 -27 days? I am 40 so I know my fertility is probaly lower although my grandma had 3 babies in her upper 40's, I wonder if I need to use the spermicide contraceptives during these times.
