After a woman is raped, can (or is) a tampon used to collect DNA evidence?

Question:
Last night on CSI, Chrstine was raped. There was a scene of her scrapping under her finger nails, and then she inserted a tampon. It looked like she removed the tampon right after insertion and put it in a bag for evidence. Is this a way of collecting DNA evidence after a woman is raped?

Answers:
They usually use a cotton swab, but if it was on CSI must be true as they have people who work on the field as tech advisors!

I still think a tampon wouldn't be very logical, though. First the woman is hurt and bruised... Can you imagine it going in? It hurt like hell... Try applying one when you're not on your period... It goes in drying and is very unconfortable. Then I am not sure if the fibers are the proper material to actually collect evidence without harming it. I am not in the US right now so I missed the episode...
Btw, who is Christine?
Sure, you could. I don't think it's the usual way but you sure could.
