BC is newer, they don't really know what happens yet. Just make sure you go to your gyno every year.

All it is hormones, unless you're planning to conceive any time in the next little while, I wouldn't worry about it

Yes, with any kind of birth control you can be on it too long! It has nothing to do with it being new or not being tested right! Your body should only be regulated on a birth control method for about 4-5 yrs then you should give the body a break from it, The birth control can cause adverse reactions and could possibly cause problems if on it for too long of time without a break! Our bodies aren't realy meant to be controlled with medicines and could get messed up from the meds. I am a nurse so I thought I would share that info w/ you! I've heard different things and since the hormones used in today's hormonal birth control methods are different than our mother's generation's birth control, we are still not exactly sure of what the long-term effects are. However, I've heard that you're supposed to only use one form of hormonal birth control for about seven years (unless you're using an intra-uterine device, which can stay in your body for 10-14 years at a time) as no one is sure what the long-term effects of them are on both your body and your fertility.

I'm assuming you're talking about depo-provera. No long-term studies have yet been done to determine risk, but it is known that the injections depleat calcium in the body, making bones less dense. Most of the bone loss is reversible once the injections are stopped, in the meantime, you should be taking a calcium supplement. Recently, some HMOs have begun to limit a patient's time on depo. For mine, the limit was set at 2 years with no option for a new prescription once terminated.

I was on depo for about a year and a half and I gained 35 pounds and nearly ruined my marriage because my hormones were so out of control. During the last 8 months I was on it, I had my period every day and I cried all the time. My experience is one of those rare ones though, it's different for eveyone.
