I've heard it's okay, but it doesn't actually stop the flow. here is what I found on-line.
Swimming and having a bath
You can swim and have baths while you have your period. The water will quickly wash out any blood in the vagina and after the first few minutes the loss will be so small no-one else will see it.
Bathwater, pool water or sea water cannot get inside your body when you have a period (just as it cannot get inside when you are not having a period).
Going to the toilet before going swimming could help you feel more confident about this, since the flow of urine will help to wash away any blood from the vagina.
Women who swim a lot usually use a tampon. They need to remove the tampon as soon as they get out of the water, and put in a dry one.
, but I don't know the reasoning behind it.
Other Answers:
Even though the pool chemicals will basically kill any bacteria from menstrual blood, it is better to use a tampon while swimming. There is also available a product called Instead, which is like a menstrual cup that you can also use. This is available in any drugstore.
yes. I don't recomend it..
um, doesnt sound very clean
its not bad but u should always have a tampon
Don't swim in a public pool when you are leaking blood. That's very unsanitary!
Yeah, It does stop temp but not for long, it could get into the pool where others are and that is gross. No one wants someone else period blood on there swimsuit, shirt or anything that you would wear in the pool. So just wait it out, its not that bad.
It's not bad for you, BUT it is unsanitary for others. Gross! Tell your mom she needs a reality check!
Yes. It is not sanitary for other people to use the same pool. Listen to your mother!
Well I wouldn't go swimming on my period. But If I did I would deffinetly wear a tampon. If your not allowed then don't go swimming what if an accident happens. I don't reccomend it evern if it temporarily stops.

Yes, it's bad to swim without a tampon when you are on your period and it's disgusting! You share that water with everyone in the pool. I doubt that you would like to be in there if you knew people were peeing in there or if you knew that a girl was in there bleeding..nasty.
I would wait until you're completely done with your period. Maybe your mom will let you wear a tampon ONLY when you swim. Good Luck.
I don't think it will hurt you. however, its just gross. the water may stop or slow down the bleeding temporally, but do you know exactly for how long? would you want to swim in some one else's menstrual blood? I know that the chemicals in the pool probably kill all of the germs, but its just gross.
The only reason your seem to stop bleeding in the pool is because the cold water constricts the muscles in your uterus and doesn't let anything out, however eventhough your not seeing blood come out doesn't mean things can't get in. ITs really not a good idea babe, not only for you but for the people in the pool with you! So unless you can convince your mom to let you use a tampon you just might have to skip the pool.
dude, whats a period? im only 12 ppl!
I recommend you listen to NurseAnne. Use something please, because even though water stops blood temporary, people will start to see the blood coming out of YOU eventually, and you don't want that to happen. It will be embarrassing to you, because everyone who realize were the blood is come from will make a seen. I know I would.
Gross! It is bad to swim without a tampon during your period. They make junior size tampons. It will not hurt you to swim without a tampon, but it is very unsanitary. Sorry.
oh it is very harmful. Don't repeat it.It can cause lots of problems to you.Avoid it and use tampon
There sure are a lot of people giving medical advice who don't know what they are talking about. The only medical professional that answered is the person you should listen to.
As a mother of 3 girls (2 of which have periods), I can see where you mother is coming from. I asked the pediatrician about tampon use for my girls and he said that it is not recommended for normal day to day use, but for a short period of time (1-2 hours) for swimming, it is okay. I let the girls use them to swim, but I am not really happy about it. Perhaps if you sit down with your mother and discuss it in a mature and educated manner, she may be okay with the idea. Maybe she just isn't ready for you to be grown up enough to wear a tampon. I know that was my biggest issue.
If she still says no, I would wait out the few days. Even though the bleeding does stop for a little while when you are in water, and it isn't going to hurt you, it is a little gross. Plus, it could be very embarrassing if you start to bleed in the middle of a public pool. If it is your own private pool at home, it should be okay, but you should respect your parents rules.
When I was a kid, I use to just wait out the few days. It isn't the end of the world. There are plenty of other things you can do instead. Good luck.
There is nothing wrong with swimming on your period.. but you should use a tampon when doing it (see if your mom will let you use one just for the short time your swimming).
P.S. dont listen to the idiots who said you shouldnt ever swim on your period its fine just have in a tampon.
