Where does ringworms come from?

Question:

Answers:
It is a fungal infection in skin, similar to tinea of feet etc. Like "fairy rings" in lawns of grass, these often grow out in a circle, as the fungus growth expands outwards.

The common causes of fungal skin infections are:

Trichophyton mentagrophytes
Trichophyton interdigitale

You might get Trichophyton rubrum, or one of the other species.

Similar diseases are caused by Microsporum canis, and other Microsporum species. These are often carried by pets. (We had a boy, a few years ago, who got a bad case of Trichophyton mentagrophytes in his scalp and head hair; he was a mess!

You get different symptoms with Malassezia furfur, and Epidermophytin floccosum, but they are other reasonably - common fungal skin infections in humans.

I am a microbiologist, and can identify these fungi in culture.

Other Answers:
It is an infection of the skin.has nothing to do with worms .is easily transmitted from animals dogs cats etc.

Ringworm, also known as Tinea, is a contagious (excluding tinea versicolor[1]) fungal infection of the skin. Contrary to its name, ringworm is not caused by a worm.

Ringworm is very common, especially among children, and may be spread by skin-to-skin contact, as well as via contact with contaminated items such as hairbrushes. Ringworm spreads readily, as those infected are contagious even before they show symptoms of the disease. Humans can contract ringworm from animals; cats and dogs are often carriers. It should be noted that any contact sports such as wrestling has a risk of contracting the fungal infection through skin-to-skin contact.
