Actually there are well over 100 different strains of HPV. Some cause warts, some don't. It can be known as the "sleeping virus" you can get it and years down the road symptoms can come up - like for a woman: abnormal pap's - sometimes that abonrmal pap is nothing and sometimes it ends up being dysplasia (there are different stages, left untreated it can cause cervical cancer). While there isn't really a test for male (usually they only know if they get a wart and have it tested) - women however, can be tested. Don't count on your ob/gyn automatically putting in a request for you to be tested - you usually have to request it. You would think that since over 80% (that number is growing rapidly everyday) of sexually active adults in the US have it, they would test for it, but they don't. Unfortunately a majority of that percentage have no idea they have it - and are shocked to find out they do, some may never find out they have it. While it is treatable, there is no cure. It's amazing that it's the number one STD, it can be one of the deadliest, yet it's the least taught about... most people have never even heard of HPV before.

Over a 100 different types of HPV exist, actually. Most are harmless, but about 30 types are spread through sexual contact and are classified as either low risk or high risk.

Some types of HPV cause genital warts-single or multiple bumps that appear in the genital areas of men and women including the vagina, cervix, vulva (area outside of the vagina), penis, and rectum. These are considered low risk types.

High-risk types of HPV may cause abnormal Pap smear results and could lead to cancers of the cervix, vulva, vagina, anus, or penis.

Many people infected with HPV have no symptoms.
