what is the danger having a 2nd baby when i am rh-sensitized?

Question:
i am rh-sensitized and my first baby was born 4 weeks early and needed a blood transfusion when she was 5 days old i was wondering if anybody had a second baby and what the outcome is??

Answers:
It is too late for Rhogam if you are already sensitized!!!! I assume that you are Rh negative and you have made the antibody to the Rh D antigen. If you have an antibody other than D or multiple antibodies then your situation may be different than what I assume. So - Your best bet is to trade your Rh positive husband in for an Rh negative one! I realize that that is not practical - we don't choose our mates based on blood type - but finding an Rh negative sperm donor could probably result in a healthy baby without HDN. If your husband has any Rh negative siblings or an Rh negative parent then he could be heterozygous for the Rh gene - meaning he is Dd and you are dd. IF that is the case then there is a 50% chance that your next baby would be Rh negative. But that is a really BIG risk and it is almost certain that should you conceive an Rh positive child it is highly likely that the baby would be severely affected and possibly require transfusions inutero - prior to birth and definitely need exchange transfusions after birth. Hemolytic Disease of the Newborn (HDN) can be fatal after the baby is born and can also result in fetal demise. The best way to determine the actual risks is for you to see a genetic counselor and your doctor to determine what the actual risk is for you. Best wishes.

THe second baby, ir RH positive can have sever breakdown of blood cells- which can cause it to die!
The above answer is true. There is a drug (vaccine) called rhogam. It prevents the rh negative mother from becoming sensitized to the baby's +rh...so that subsequent pregnancies will not cause problems if the baby is rh+.

Here is some more information about Rhogam and rh incompatability between rh- mothers and rh+ babies.
