Metformin is safe to be on for long periods of time. Look at the true reasoning behind this medication. Its for diabetics and my father has been on it for years....yet it doesn't have the same side effects on him..a true diabetic...and me a insulin resistance pcos sufferer! I get very ill on it. He had some stomach issues as well but only in the beginning while he was adjusting to the medication. Now that could be because he's using the med for its normal purpose or it could be different bodies...I dunno but there are people, diabetics, all over the world taking metformin in the same dosage (1500-2000mg/day) and they've been on it for years!

It seems metformin's biggest purpose for pcos sufferers is to help them balance and adjust all their hormone levels and insulin levels back to normal. This is a great tool to help you get the stubborn weight off that pcos packs onto you. I think diet and exercise are what most experts say is the best way to manage your pcos and your best bet to get pregnant. The more overweight you are the harder it will be to get pregnant even with things like clomid. My biggest issue is the weight comes off to slow and I lose my ambition and my momentum. Take care of you...what's another year for somebody who has been trying 12 years. In a year if you dedicate yourself you could lose 2lbs a week (that's the healthy way) equalling up to 104lbs....and THAT will give you great chances at getting pregnant. My doctor even informed me losing 20lbs helps your chances greatly!

Now if you're a naturally skinny person and nothing is working and your insulin intolerance is under control...I recommend looking into invitro with a donor egg or adoption.

Just an opinion, but see if you can talk to an alternative doctor in your area. They might have avenues that work or good for long haul.
Reality check: There are TONS of children out there who need a good home.
I had a hysterectomy when I was 24. I still feel that carnal cry for reproduction. One of these days I plan on either fostering or adopting.
There are alternatives!
