First of all I'd advise that you address any issues you have with your body that may make you concerned about inserting anything into your vagina. Socially girls are still taught that their genitals are all sorts of negative things, although you may not think you are affected by it chances are if you have problems with insertion there is some sort of issue there, and until you get to terms with that it is going to make things difficult for you I am afraid.
I would recommend learning more about your body, looking into more body-positive women's work such as work by Inga Muscio, Carol Livoti, Joani Blank or Eve Ensler and explore your body to see that there is nothing to be scared of.

Second of all if concerned about inserting tampons then question is; why do you want to use tampons?
Tampons, in particular commercial tampons such as Tampax or Playtex are actually the most harmful out of over twenty different menstrual options; there are a lot of negatives.
Tampons stop your vagina from cleaning itself, absorb fluids it needs to stay moist, give bacteria a place to multiply at rapid rates kept within your vagina and contain chemicals that can be harmful to your health.
As such tampon use means increased risk of toxic shock syndrome, vaginal infections such as bacterial vaginosis, vaginal splitting, and increased menstrual cramps.

I would advise sticking with pads, try cloth pads like Lunapads or Urban Armour, or organic pads like Natracare. When you are more comfortable with inserting things into your vagina try going for menstrual cups, these are far safer than tampons, as well as easier to use, far more convenient, environmentally friendly, cheap and body-positive.
If you insist on using tampons then I would highly recommend using safer options to commercial tampons such as organic tampons, sponge tampons or homemade tampons.
This is because these are made from natural materials and do not contain chemicals as commercial tampons do, although there are still risks those risks are reduced.

kotex and playtex are good brands. once you get used to it, you won't want to use pads anymore. just follow the instructions on the box.
