What are peoples experiences of the contraceptive injection? Good or Bad?

Question:
I'm thinking of going on the contraceptive injection. I have spoken about it with my long term boyfriend as we don't like condoms - neither of us have an STI so we don't need to use a barrier method, but I don't like the idea of taking a pill everyday. The only other option was the contraceptive patch - but thats visable. Please let me know your experiences of the contraceptive injection (and does it hurt when they give it to you?)

Answers:
I started using the depo shot about three years ago- it was great- except for the weight gain and excessive mood swings. During the three years i used depo i had maybe three periods (as opposed to my sister who bled for three months) each person reacts differently but i found for about three days before and after the shot i became excessively moody. I would cry at COMMERCIALS (!!) on t.v. and lash out for no apparent reason. The shot never really hurt- mild pain at the site of the injection- typically i had the shot in my butt cheek- the one time i did do it in my arm the nurse ended up tearing the muscle. The needle is alot longer then you'd think b.c. it is a muscle shot... and trust me- for the amount of tattoos i have im no wimp. But my arm hurt like a sob for two weeks. I took myself off the shot 9 mnth ago and have started back on the pill. My periods are still not back to normal. Personally i would NOT reccomend the shot. As for the patch they are terrible! They say you can use it for a week and shower etc with it on but i found that it would either begin to peel or build up that sticky gunk around it. Typically mine would fall off about 3-4 days in regaurdless of where i put it.. (shoulder, hip and butt) I would reccomend using the ring- it's really easy to insert and stays put. I myself just prefer the pill- it's the old tried and true (for the most part.. since i myself was a B.c baby)
The experience is different for different people. Most people are pretty happy with it. However some react negatively to it. You should consult with your doctor and try it out.
