After-care for a self-pierced belly button?

Question:
I self-pierced my belly button the day before yesturday and other than being a little red and sore, it is fine.
It fits a 1.6mm belly bar and at the moment i have a safety pin closed through the hole.
Can anyone give me advice on how to care for it from now on?
What type of metal should i use for bars and what type of spray or liquid should i put on it to prevent infection and to keep it clean?

Answers:
surgical steel bars are best-they carry the lowest risk of allergic reaction. get nothing that is nickel-based..these can cause an allergic reaction and infection

you should soak it with sea salt and water 2-3 times a day. any piercing place should sell the salt w/the instructions. use really warm water with 2 tsp of salt and soak for 15 mins.

you should do this for about 2-3 weeks. and once you replace the safety pin with the bar-keep it in for a minimum of 3 weeks so the hole has time to heal-otherwise it could get infected or close up.

signs of infection that would require you to remove the piercing are:

-increased redness or swelling at the piercing site
-the site become extremely painful or hot to touch
-you suddenly develop a fever
-the site begins to drain any sort of liquid (especially if it's green or yellowish brown in color)

if you do develop an infection-remove the piercing immediately and wash the site well with warm water and mild soap. apply a thin layer of neosporin and cover with a gauze square. make an appt to see your dr as you might need antibiotics.
Titanium and salt water thats it and well done Clit next xx
