it can last from 3-9 days at first you are on and off and it could turn up at any time so no it cant you just have to deal with it

Plus she will have periods on and off for the rest of her life, only once a month. When you have one you need to record it on a calendar so that when she visits the Doctors office they will ask her when her last period was.
When I first started, my periods lasted a long time -- about 10 days. After 3 months or so, they settled down into a normal length.
There's nothing you can do to shorten it, but see a doctor if it becomes a big problem (very heavy or painful)
