I don't know if this is considered spotting, what causes this though?

Question: it's like in the beg. of your period when it's a little bit but mostly brown and every now and then a bit more red. it's slimy and i have never had this before even though i'm 21...have an appt with my gyno on the 29th, but just wondering if anyone here could give me a heads up. Thanks!
