I had a vaginal hysterectomy in August 2003 and it was one of the best things I have ever done! I didn't realize how poor my quality of life had become. I was swollen and bloated all the time, had pain and spotting. My periods had never been heavy or bad, but they were becoming increasingly worse. I went into the hospital in the morning, had the surgery and went home home next day. I had mild cramps and I was tired, but other than that it was easy. I was back walking for exercise and felt like a million bucks in just 2 weeks. I stayed out of work for 6 weeks, but I really didn't need to. Since there are no incisions on the outside and no cutting through muscle and such it is just amazing how little pain there is. I only took Rx pain meds for two nights and then ibuprofen for a couple of nights after. I would make the choice again in a second! Good luck.
This surgery is way easier than childbirth and you won't have a baby to take care of when you get home...you can be the one being babied!
don't you think you should be asking your doctor this?
If this is medically required the approach is the best. The recovery is fast and you will have the least pain, all without scars.
As for whether it is needed you need to do your homework. Remember, the doctor would not ask you if you want a treatment if there was no alternative and little doubt about the prognosis. This is a sign that you are making the decision and not the doctor. If you feel you are not qualified, you are probably right.
Endometriosis can rob you of an active life. If this has caused you pain, and not being able to enjoy your family - then you are doing the right thing.
Your hysterectomy should not cause too much pain, but if they are removing your ovaries you will be put into menopause and may experience hot flashes, etc. See the articles I highlighted for more information on the surgery and on menopause.
Good luck with your surgery
My mom had one and she said it was painful but not as bad as it would have been if they had to cut her open. She was off work for about 6 weeks, but she's fine now. She had fibroid tumors in her uterus so she was bleeding very badly and in pain all the time. She said it's the best thing she ever did.
Well, yes, you will experience some pain but, the recovery process is relatively quick. And, of course, you will be prescribed medicine for the pain. You can expect bleeding after the procedure and this may happen for 2-4 weeks, but, each person is different. Some women have bleeding for about a week. The bleeding shouldn't be excessive. Once you have fully recovered, you will feel so much better. Be certain to follow the Doc's discharge instructions after the procedure. A vaginal hysterectomy is a very common procedure and, you should talk to your Doc or the office Nurse if you have any concerns or questions before you have the procedure. I hope this helps and Good Luck.
Had mine in 2002. First off the pain from the surgery will be very minimal. My back though, hurt for 2 years after wards. Not trying to scare you. They put you in an almost upside down position during surgery. You won't hardly bleed at all. Because they are taking out your uterus. I bleed for 2 days. I WOULD not let them take BOTH ovaries though. I beg you unless you have cancer, don't let them. They do not tell you all the things that happen to you. A surgical hysterectomy will throw you into early menopause. If you are concerned after wards, if they take both ovaries you will need to take estrogen. Weigh them factors.I can't take estrogen and life can be HELL some days. Hot Flashes, Mood Swings, Insomnia, Loss of sexual desire, Fatigue. So , yes I would have the surgery again. NO NO NO, I would not let them take both ovaries. Even make them leave 1. The choice is yours. It is your body. Good Luck
