Advice on coming off Contraception Injection (Depo Provera)?
Question:
Since the very first injection I have had not a single period or bleeding at any time so Ive been very lucky. I was a bit moody right at the start 9 years ago and used to get some under the skin tiny spots on my face but as they were skin coloured it didnt bother me. The only side effect Ive had is a MASSIVE increase in appetite and Im hungry a lot of the time!
Please could anyone give me some advice about stopping? My next injection is due in about 2 weeks. I have heard horror stories about 3 months constant bleeding, terrible acne or spots, weight gain etc etc. I was thinking about using condoms for a few months and getting back to normal before going on the pill.
Any advice greatly appreciated - my Doctor doesnt seem to know all that much about coming off it and Id value some opinions. Thanks
Answers:
Depo-Provera containing a hormone, progesterone, similar to what your body produces, prevents release of the egg from the ovary and causes changes in cervical mucus and the lining of the uterus. Its effectiveness against pregnancy is 99%.
Disadvantages of the injectable contraceptive does not protect against STD's. Fertility returns 6-24 months after last injection.
Side effects are irregular periods, loss of interest in sex, bloating/weight gain, headaches, depression, bone mineral loss, nervousness, skin rashes or spotty darkening of the skin, and increased body hair. Side effects last until the medication is out of your system
hi i was on the injection for 7 years and stopped last year, i just did not go back for the next injection and used condoms, i had not had a period for 7 years and they started again after 6 months or so (shock to the system), apparently there are links being made now to the injection and osteoporosis in later life !
Hi there, at last someone who has been on Depo-Provera for ages!! thought I was the only one. I was on it for 10 yrs, I'm 41 now, and came off it a year ago, I have been very lucky.. I actually lost a stone in weight without really trying, my sex drive came back, I had no heavy periods, no side affects etc, had my 1st period about 5 months after I came off inj. A lot of doctors in the UK wont prescribe it anymore?? bad press etc, but I felt great on it as I suffer from very bad PMT and Depo was a live saver!! Only came off like you for a break and cos of the weight problem. If you suffer from PMT let me know and I'll tell what I take now instead of Depo, its herbal tab not Contraceptive though.
